Training Programs

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Both clinical and research fellowships are available.

The main objective of the clinical fellowship program is leadership training. Children's mental health is a young profession. Until very recently, we have depended almost entirely on our leaders receiving training abroad: in the United States and Great Britain. Our best students have not had adequate advanced training opportunities in Canada.

Our Fellowship Program aims to correct this. We offer one or two years of focused post-qualification study to professionals of many disciplines. Fellowships are full time and include seminars, clinical supervision and academic tutoring. Areas of study include:
  • Important new knowledge of emotional, social and cognitive development;
  • Effective new intervention methods and opportunities to specialize in a particular area of practice;
  • Community consultation and community-wide approaches.
Since 1989, we have graduated some 70 fellows who are currently practicing across Canada and the United States.

The Research Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for post-graduates to dedicate one to two years to research methodology. Areas of study include:
  • Infant mental health;
  • Prevention of mental health problems;
  • Community outreach;
  • Language and cognitive disorders
Funding

Funding is available for a limited number of psychologist and social work placements. Psychiatry Fellows fellowships are self-funded through Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), billings. Psychiatry fellows require a valid license to practice in the province of Ontario.

MANAGEMENT SERIES

The Hincks-Dellcrest Centre - Gail Appel Institute provides both training and consultation to human service organizations across Canada. Management consultation is available to staff and Board members of human services organizations on a wide variety of topics. Senior managers and clinicians can respond to specific organizational and program issues.

Workshops are offered in the following broad categories:
  • Supervision
  • Board Training
  • Management
  • Professional Development
Seminars for a Balanced Work and Family Life address the fact that today, employers are realizing, more and more, that it makes good business sense to assist employees through family support seminars. Research has shown that family support seminars contribute to reduced employee turnover, less absenteeism, reduced stress, increased productivity and favourable public relations.

Family Support Seminars range from full day workshops to one hour lunch time sessions. Seminars can be specifically designed to meet the needs of individual corporations. Seminar topics include:
  • Stress Management: Balancing Your World
  • The Challenging Child: The Challenged Parent
  • Time Management: Making Time Work for You
  • Communication: How to Talk With Your Child
  • Empowering Yourself: The Importance of Self-Esteem
  • Helping Children Manage Stress
  • TV or Not TV: The Taming of the Tube
Management workshops are designed for small groups (25 of less), to facilitate interaction, discussion, and a blending of practical know-how with strong conceptual skills in a relaxed and open learning environment. Workshops are offered at both our Jarvis Street and Sheppard Avenue locations, or can be brought into the workplace.
